Streamlining the Prefab Home Process

Streamlining the Prefab Home Process
29. Jun, 2012
Jared Levy and Gordon Stott have rethought the modular home from its economic nexus:
The cost of transportation.
Instead of depending solely on trucks and highways, their Connect: Homes, scaled to the size of one of the most commonly used shipping containers, utilizes the intermodal network of rail, truck or boat.
“The fatal flaw in the prefab industry is shipping,” Stott says. “To ship a modular home across the country by highways can cost $200,000.”

Connect:Homes seeks to transform contemporary prefabricated homes, and based on how the company’s debut at Dwell on Design went last weekend in Los Angeles, the company is sure on its way with the fantastic Connect 2.0. The company’s founders chose DOD to launch their company, and so far they have impressed us with this responsibly built and customizable home that could work as a studio, guest house, or even a vacation home.

Cozy Connect:2 Prefab Wows California

Cozy Connect:2 Prefab Wows California
By Preston on Jun. 28, 2012

I mentioned the launch of Connect:Homes recently and how the founders of this company hope to reinvent modular prefab with a unique approach. They took a big first step towards doing that with a prototype home on display at Dwell on Design in Los Angeles last weekend. The crowds, from everything I’ve heard, deeply enjoyed this warm, contemporary abode and the interior touch of style by Kishani Perera.

Dwell on Design Report #2: Getting Connected with Connect:Homes

DWELL ON DESIGN REPORT #2: GETTING CONNECTED WITH CONNECT:HOMES

-- All we can say is that it was the biggest surprise we'd ever seen in 640 square feet! If fact, we wanted to move into the new Connect:2 prototype home from Connect:Homes immediately -- and so did a lot of other attendees at the Dwell on Design show (sponsored by Dwell magazine) at the Los Angeles Convention Center this past weekend where "green" was everywhere -- but no one made us feel more completely at home as the folks from Connect:Homes. There is so much to talk about with this prototype that made its debut at the Dwell show: first of all, it's one bedroom and one bath and it's ideal for a second home, a vacation cabin or as a backyard guesthouse or studio.

Putting the Fab Back in PreFab: Connect Homes

Putting the Fab Back in PreFab:
Connect Homes

Despite flying the flags of accessibility, affordability and globalization, pre-fab homes have always been a local concept with a client range of only a couple of hundred miles. Where's the revolution in that? That was precisely what moved Jared Levy and Gordon Stott of Connect Homes to rethink the parameters of pre-fab housing. In fact, they — literally — busted them open.

New Cali-Made Prefab Houses Tackle the Shipping Problem

New Cali-Made Prefab Houses Tackle the Shipping Problem
Wednesday, June 13, 2012, by Adrian Glick Kudler

Two architect alums from the firm of prefab pioneer Marmol Radziner Prefab have joined forces and launched a new modular house line called Connect:Homes--Jared Levy and Gordon Stott hope to address the prefab price problem (the manufacturing never seems to scale) with a new approach to shipping. The houses' modules are almost completely built in the company's California factory and "designed to ship like shipping containers via truck, rail, or sea" (but they are not actually shipping containers--important difference with what an architect like Peter DeMaria does). The company has eight designs (plus a custom option), ranging from one-bedroom, one-story, and 640 square feet to four-bedroom, two-story, 2,560 square feet. And of course they all come designed to achieve LEED Silver status. Price start at $145 per square foot after delivery or $165 per square foot after installation.

Connect Homes to Reinvent Modular Prefab

By Preston on May 10, 2012

Today, two prefab veterans launch their website for a new company called Connect:Homes with a mission to “deliver modern homes that are affordable, green, and available wherever your are.” The co-founders Jared Levy and Gordon Stott, both formerly with Marmol Radziner Prefab, started the Los Angeles-based enterprise to reinvent modular prefab and deliver homes that are predictably priced, inherently green, and shipped most anywhere at a lower cost.

By Land or by Sea: New Prefab Firm Offers Game-Changing Delivery System

Green Tech - 5/15/2012 Matt Hickman for the Mother Nature Network

There’s a new modern green prefab company on the scene gearing up to produce sleek, factory-built homes that no doubt possess a couple of deceiving, shipping container-ish traits including, most notably, an easy-to-transport nature and rectangular form. But when it comes down to it, these modular beauties are anything but shipping container homes.

Modern Connect:Homes are the Latest in Affordable, Green Prefab Design

Bridgette Meinhold, Inhabitat 05.10.12 -

Levy and Stott spent 6 years working in prefab design and building with Marmol Radziner, and realized that there were a lot of problems in the industry. So they set out to fix those problems by starting their own company with a strategy that more efficiently builds homes in the factory setting and bringing down the cost of shipping with smaller modules. Connect:Homes is an LA-based prefab company based on a patent pending modular system that cuts delivery costs by close to 90%. The goal was to develop a home that could be shipped anywhere with normal truck transport without breaking the bank, and based on the renderings, we think they might be on to something.
